Dr. Chen Wei-jian: Background. From nineteen thirty-seven the Communists and Nationalists fought Japan together as the Second United Front. August nineteen forty-five, Japan surrenders. By October, Mao and Chiang meet at Chongqing. Talks fail. The civil war resumes.

Dr. Liu Mei-Hua: The forces. Nationalist KMT under Chiang Kai-shek: four point three million troops, American weapons, controlled the cities. Communist PLA under Mao Zedong: one point two million troops, deep peasant base in the countryside.

Dr. Chen Wei-jian: Manchuria first. Soviets occupy Manchuria August nineteen forty-five. They withdraw March forty-six and transfer captured Japanese weapons to the Communist PLA. Lin Biao's Northeast army builds. By autumn nineteen forty-eight, all Manchuria is red.
